How Clones Of works
A clone is a free program with public code that tries to look and work like a famous app. It is not just another program that does the same job: it is built to feel like the original.
How a program gets listed
We look at each project's public page: what it says about itself and its screenshots. A program is listed when it scores at least 2 of these 4 points:
- It names the original app.
- It calls itself a clone, a replacement, or "in the style of" that app.
- It opens the original app's files.
- Its screens look like the original's.
Each clone's page shows which points it meets and the version we checked.
What the meters mean
- Closeness: the points above, from 0 to 4.
- Difficulty: Easy means you install it with an installer or open it in your browser. Medium means you unpack a compressed file or confirm a warning from your system. Hard means there is no ready-to-use version yet.
- Activity: Active means a new version in the last 3 months. Slow means 3 to 12 months. Abandoned means more than 12 months. If a project publishes no versions, we use the date of its last change.
- Systems: the computers it runs on, based on the files the project publishes.
- Size: the size of the largest installer in the latest version.
- Popularity: Popular means at least 1,000 people follow the project on its public page; Very popular means at least 10,000. Below that, we show nothing.
- Files it opens: what the project says, labeled "According to the project".
"Not tested yet" means we don't have that information yet.
Where the data comes from
From each project's public page, checked once a day. It may be out of date.
We do not review the programs
Clones Of does not host any downloads and does not review or test the programs. The download button takes you to the project's own site or to its downloads page. You install any program at your own risk.
